Bantams Win Silver in Oshawa
On the weekend the Bantam B Sabres girls hockey team came home with silver medals for their efforts in the Tournament of Champions for the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League.(LLFHL)

The tournament featured the four division playoff champions in a round robin tournament and the top 2 teams advancing to play for gold. The West Division champs by virtue of their playoff victories over Waterloo, Wilmot and Kincardine played the Grand River Mustangs in game 1. Grand River had only 1 loss in league play played physical but our girls came out on top with a 2-1 win. Scoring for the Sabres was Lianne Taylor and Leah Clausius with Clausius and Jessica Houston registering assists. In game 2 later that day the Sabres played the East Division champs from Belleville and played to a 1-1 draw. The Sabres goal came from the stick of Allison Gorman and Taylor and Clausius recording the assists. South Huron looked poised for their second victory of the day until a late goal on a screened shot from the point knotted the score. On Saturday the highly anticipated battle of the Sabres took place as South Huron took on a very large team from Stoney Creek also known as the Sabres. South Huron took the lead when Brooklyn Rau intercepted a clearing pass in Stoney Creek's end and ripped a wrist shot past the goalie. Again the lead looked like it might hold up only to have Stoney Creek score with less than 5 minutes remaining to tie the game. The game remained tied even though both teams had chances and a great breakaway save from Charlotte Finlay in the last 2 minutes preserved the tie. This meant with a record of 1 win and 2 ties that South Huron and Stoney Creek would again play Saturday night in the gold medal game. In the final game the local girls appeared a little nervous with their normally crisp passes being slightly off and Stoney Creek scoring an early goal did not help. The second and third period the girls found their legs and passing and had numerous scoring chances and took the play to their opposition with no results to show for their efforts. With less than a minute left South Huron pulled their goalie for an extra attacker but Stoney Creek scored in the empty net to finish them off. The girls had an excellent weekend and in 2 weeks are Toronto bound for the OWHA Provincials. Way to Go Sabres as you played well and represented the area with class!!
