Comments – It was a battle of the top ranked Tyke
teams of the Lambton Middlesex League Saturday as the (13-1-1) South Huron
Sabres hosted 1st place Point Edward Blackhawks (14-1-1). “This game
had been circled on the calendar for a long time”, remarked Assistant Coach Scott
Wedlake. Point Edward was everything the Sabres had heard they were. The big
and fast team from the border town attacked the young Sabres early and jumped
out to a quick 4-1 lead half way through the game. Once again the South Huron
squad started out slowly. “It seemed like only 1 player would have a good shift
and the other 4 on the ice were spectators”, said Trainer Grant Laws. After the
Sabres would claw into the Black Hawks leads, the Hawks would counter back. The
score would eventually get to 7-4 for the visitors and then the Home team
started skating as a unit. Ryder Livermore would kick start the comeback
followed by line mate Carter Bowerman. Bowerman’s legs were pumping all game
and it paid off as he tied the score with 2 quick goals with less than 9
minutes to play. The combination of Ryan Laws and Mitchell Kenney were a force
late in the game as well. Kenney would get 2 goals in the contest, but it was
the bulldog Ryan Laws who would get the eventual game winner. Livermore would add some insurance in the
final 3 minutes, which deflated the visitors. There were a lot of great
contributors to the game, “I always tell the team – you don’t have to score a
goal to make a difference. If you make a great play on defence – that’s as good
as a goal. A great save or an assist is exactly the same as well”, noted Head
Coach Mark Livermore. “We have guys who have developed into pretty good
defencemen (Scott Knoblauch, Mathew Borland and Aiden Durnin), I thought those
core defence played exceptionally well.” In the high scoring affair Sabres
goalie Drew Gibbings made big time saves when it mattered. It was an exciting
game won by the home team, but the Sabres will have to quickly put that win
behind them and get ready for the rematch this Tuesday night (March 8) in Point
Edward. The 2 teams are very evenly matched so it should be another
entertaining game.
