Comments – The South Huron squad travelled on a school
night to finish up the home and home series with the Point Edward Black Hawks.
The previous game in Stephen was a great end to end game. This same was
expected in the second game. The strong Black Hawk team survived a great 1st
shift by the Sabres and were able to capitalize on their 2nd shift
of the game. Pt Edward’s lead was short lived when hard working Carter Bowerman
answered with 2 goals within a minute of each other. Scott Dickins was a great
contributor to both goals as he picked up an assist on each score. Like a Heavy
weight match between two of the strongest Tyke teams around the Black Hawks
would answer with 2 goals of their own to take a 3-2 lead. “These two teams are
very even and it makes for great entertainment”, stated trainer Grant Laws.
Again, the lead would change hands when Ryan Laws and Mitchell Kenney each
scored on the same shift 5 minutes after the Hawks took the lead. Laws would
not be done there as he followed Ryder Livermore on a breakaway. Livermore would be denied
by the home goalie, but Laws was there for the rebound. Livermore would score a minute later to make
the score 6-3. It looked like the Sabres were forging their way to an easy
victory, but that was not the case. After that 6th Sabre goal the
Black Hawks responded with 2 goals to make it a one goal game with a tonne of
time on the clock. Goalies Drew Gibbings of South Huron and Cole Riddell of
Point Edward were kept busy all game. Both netminders made save after save late
in the game. The Sabres would add some insurance with ten minutes to go when
Laws completed his hat trick. The relentless tykes from the border town would
score late, but it was one goal short. The Sabres would hang on to sweep the 2
game series 7-6. “These 2 games were fun to watch and a lot of credit has to go
out to all the players on both teams. Every player played hard right to the
final buzzer. I wish we could have played these guys (Pt Edawrd) a few more
times this season”, explained Manager Lee Gibbings.
